You forget DBT skills in the heat of the moment.

The problem is that you forget DBT skills when you need them most. Your prefrontal cortex goes offline when you're in emotional mind. You're not going to calmly remember what your therapist said two weeks ago. The brain flicks through the acronyms, gets overwhelmed, and picks nothing — or only the ones you can remember — and you don't always have the book. Trying to learn how to swim while you're drowning. Sometimes we need something immediate.

So you screenshot the skills into a folder. Laminate a 3x2 for the wallet. Keep the book on Kindle. Ice at night — cold compress, ice lolly, a bowl of ice, a pack in the car at work. You left the expensive copy at the beach and you are in crisis. Yeah but in the moment that is not going to stop you from spiralling downwards.

The apps that looked close were too clinical or way too bloated, or they locked most of the content behind a monthly subscription and you deleted them. Half the best stuff is paywalled, and the meditations feel too slow in a crisis. You don't remember about the app in times of distress. You only use it when you feel somewhat ok.

A week later you walk into session with "I don't know, it was fine." You meant to practice. You meant to write it down. The homework lived in a binder you didn't have, or a journal that felt like venting into a void.

The belief underneath: you'll remember the skill when it counts. A DBT app is either a course, a clinician portal, or $60 a cycle — and the thing you need at 2 AM is behind the paywall. Remembering is not the mechanism. Paywalled TIPP is why you delete the apps.

The skill has to be on the phone. Not in the binder. Not behind a subscription.

A skill you can start before the acronym search starts.

Conviction is a private on-device iPhone journal with DBT-shaped tools for the gap between therapy or coaching sessions. Talk. Then use a walkthrough. Nobody else can read it.

You talk the spike, or you skip straight to a tool. Safe Harbor is body-first when the skill is TIPP. The Mirror is Check the Facts on what you actually said. Pattern Lab is chain analysis as session prep. The Council is DEAR MAN, GIVE, FAST when you need the words. Then you close the phone. You walk into the next session with the week, not a reconstructed vibe. I'm Phillip — independent developer in Berlin, not a clinician. This is not a DBT course. It is not therapy. It is not affiliated with Linehan or Behavioral Tech.

How it works

1

Talk the spike. Or skip to a tool.

Open it and speak. Transcription runs on your iPhone. Audio is not uploaded. Or go straight to Safe Harbor, The Mirror, Pattern Lab, or The Council.

2

Do the skill. On the phone.

Walkthroughs, not a PDF of acronyms. TIPP and grounding in Safe Harbor. Check the Facts in The Mirror. Chain analysis in Pattern Lab. DEAR MAN in The Council.

3

Take the week to session.

Entries you can actually review. Pattern spotting on-device. Export or screenshot what you want to share. Keep the rest.

The skills you already learned. On the phone you already have.

Safe Harbor. Body first when the skill is TIPP.

When intensity is high, regular skills feel impossible. Grounding, paced breathing, Orient. Survive the peak without making it worse. On the device. Not a meditation paywall.

  1. I need a moment Orient and paced breathing when the acronyms won't come. On your iPhone. Offline is fine.
  2. TIPP-shaped, not a course Temperature, intense exercise, paced breathing, progressive relaxation — the job is bring the intensity down so the next skill is possible.
  3. Then stop This is distress tolerance, not solving the life problem. Close the phone. Or take one thing to Thursday.

The Mirror. Check the Facts on what you said.

You talked. Now work the thought. CBT/DBT thought work attached to your own words — not a blank worksheet you have to copy from the binder.

  1. Your words, not a prompt bank The Mirror uses the entry. Check the Facts, not a generic "what are you grateful for."
  2. One thought at a time The distortion, the urge, the other interpretation. Session-prep, not an AI therapist.
  3. Keep it or share it Screenshot or export what you want your clinician to see. The rest stays on the phone.
Pattern Lab and The Council. The rest of the modules.: What keeps repeating
Phone frame

Pattern Lab and The Council. The rest of the modules.

Chain analysis when you keep arriving at the same blow-up. DEAR MAN, GIVE, FAST when you need the words before the conversation. Shadow work when you want the part you usually skip.

  1. What keeps repeating Pattern Lab traces trigger to thought to emotion to behavior. Bring the chain, not "yeah I think I'm doing better maybe."
  2. The conversation you keep avoiding The Council: assertiveness and validation. Write the DEAR MAN before you send the text.
  3. Not a replacement for group Practice between sessions. Skills group and therapy stay the source. This is the pocket copy.

And so much more.

Talk instead of hunting the binder.

You think faster than you can write. Tap once and talk. Then a tool. Audio is not uploaded. Transcription stays on the iPhone.

27 emotions. Not a five-face slider.

Every entry is read for 27 emotions on your phone. Guilt vs. shame. The skill you pick next is easier when the feeling has a name.

No streaks. No account. Airplane mode works.

Momentum, not a streak. No email. Optional Apple Sign-In only for encrypted iCloud backup or Health. Export anytime.

The skill you need in a spike is not a subscription.

Questions you should ask

Is this a DBT app?

Conviction is a private on-device voice journal with DBT-shaped tools: Safe Harbor (distress tolerance / TIPP-style grounding), The Mirror (Check the Facts / thought work), Pattern Lab (chain analysis), The Council (DEAR MAN, GIVE, FAST). It is not a DBT course, not skills training, and not affiliated with Marsha Linehan, Behavioral Tech, or Guilford.

Is this a replacement for therapy or skills group?

No. It is for the space between sessions. Phillip Paul, who built it in Berlin, is an independent developer, not a clinician. If you are in crisis, get professional help. Conviction will not do that job.

Is this a diary card?

No. There is no Linehan diary-card grid. You talk (or type), then use a skill walkthrough. If your homework is a paper diary card, this is the skills-in-your-pocket layer — not a replacement for the card your clinician assigned.

Do I need iPhone 15 Pro or later?

Yes. Conviction requires Apple Intelligence, which means iPhone 15 Pro or later. That is how the on-device work runs. If you don't have that phone, this app is not for you — don't download it hoping it will stretch.

Is my stuff actually private?

Transcription, pattern spotting, and emotion analysis run on your iPhone. Audio is not uploaded. There is no account. Optional Apple Sign-In exists only for encrypted iCloud backup or Apple Health. Airplane mode works.

Is Pro a subscription?

No. Free to start. Pro is $3.99 once — not a subscription, not an annual plan. No credit card to download.

Do I have to create an account?

No. No email. No password. Open it and talk, or open a tool. Apple Sign-In is optional, and only if you want encrypted iCloud backup or Apple Health.

Are TIPP and the crisis tools paywalled?

Safe Harbor (grounding, paced breathing, Orient) is in the free app. Conviction is not a crisis line and cannot send help. If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number (911 in the US). For emotional distress in the US, call or text 988.

A DBT skill in your pocket. Between sessions — not instead of them.

On-device. No account. Talk, then a walkthrough. iPhone 15 Pro or later.
